Saunders to take place of Colon Saturday

MLB.com reports that Saunders will start in place of Colon on Saturday. Bartolo is missing his start because of triceps tendinitis, and he will likely make his following start on schedule with a little extra rest.

San Antonio is a Land of Unhappiness

Do these guys even need to say anything to let their team know they are unhappy in AA? Cesar Ramos, the one on the right, seems to have completely lost the will to live.

Maybe they are unhappy because their teammates are possessed. Check out the eyes on this guy:

Speier, Anderson

According to the LA Times, Justin Speier threw a bit on Friday and will throw again tomorrow. He will then be re-evaluated on Tuesday. He has been out since April 30th with the feared "flu-like symptoms", and has been missed very much. How does a guy miss an entire month with flu-like symptoms? If he misses much more time, I'm going to start thinking he's actually got a full-blown case of mono, just like our good buddy Kotchman. Let's hope not.

The Angels also have a left fielder named Garret Anderson. He hasn't played in a long time, and it's kind of hard to remember he was ever out in left ever since Reggie Willits came along. GA is supposed to return sometime in the next week and take over the DH job, which I assume means that Shea will be knocked out of the lineup, rather than be moved to LF and kick Reggie out, but you just never know with Scioscia. That was kind of a long sentence.

Sweep!

Bootcheck

What is the deal with Bootcheck? He has only pitched four times this month, and when he does pitch, it's almost always a losing game. The Angels are 3-8 in games in which he has pitched, and that is only because they are losing when he enters the game. He isn't pitching that bad; in fact, he is pitching way better than Darren Oliver. Does Oliver's veteran presence make him that much better, and worthy of being used more often? Here are a whole bunch of stats to show why Bootcheck shouldn't sit in the bullpen collecting dust while Oliver proves to be a valuable player for Angels opponents:

Isn't Oliver's main purpose to be a left-hand specialist? More like left-hand batting practice specialist. A WHIP of 5.00 against lefties! Only three innings, sure, but that is FIFTEEN baserunners in THREE innings! He has allowed them to score by giving up two homers against left-handers. Then he puts more runners on, leading to his .600 opponent batting average. Bootcheck, while not excellent against lefties, is at least better than Oliver. The strange thing here is that neither pitcher has any decisions, despite a combined 29 appearances.

Weaver made his major league debut on May 27th of last year, just a couple days away from being a full year. It was a great turn-around for the Angels, as they are 97-65 since the day of his debut. In that time, Weaver has faced the Yankees once, when he pitched a six inning, one run game. Tyler Clippard pitched very well in his major league debut against the Mets on Sunday. Today, the Angels teach him that the big leagues aren't as easy as he thinks.

Funny headline

This is an actual MLB.com news headline from yesterday's game:

"Colon hit hard in loss to Tigers"

Was that on purpose or was whoever wrote that not paying attention? That reminds me of another Colon related headline from earlier this season:

"Royals to Get a Taste of Angels' Colon"

That one HAD to be a joke, right?

More importantly, Reggie Willits (2007 Rookie of the Year, All-Star, and World Series MVP) has a sore hamstring, and did not play today. It doesn't sound too serious, though, and he will probably be back for the next series against the Yankees.

Despite getting mauled by the Tigers today, Ervin is going to stay in the rotation, according to Scioscia. The next two Santana starts are at home, and he needs to take advantage of this opportunity and actually pitch well.

That didn't go very well

Doesn't it seem that Santana is always pitching on the day games? Or on the road? Or both, like today? The Tigers better forget how to hit today, or it will be trouble for the Los Darren Olivers of Ervin. Here is a chart to show how bad Ervin is in situations like this (2007 stats):

Angels "have no interest" in Percival

According to the LA Times, the Angels do not have any interest in signing former closer Troy Percival.

The Angels have no interest in signing former closer Troy Percival, General Manager Bill Stoneman said Tuesday.

"With the strength of our pen — we have as strong if not stronger a pen than when we did not ask him back — I think that's probably out," Stoneman said. "To think we're looking for help for the bullpen, that's not where our priorities are at."
While signing Percival would be a risk, I would certainly prefer to have him in the bullpen than Darren Oliver. If the Angels don't want him, though, the Tigers are apparently interested. He could possibly take the set-up job there, while he would likely be only a middle reliever here.

In other news, Scioscia says Anderson will not be a full-time DH when he returns from the DL. The article does not clearly state who will play DH when G.A. doesn't, and where Willits will end up playing.

The same article also states that rumors of the Angels possibly trading Figgy and Molina to the Yankees for Jason Gilbert Giambi are false.

Was it really necessary to bring in Darren Oliver in a one run game in the 8th? Opponents were hitting .352 against him before today, and that will go up even more after he allowed two hits to the five batters he faced. Only ONCE this year has he gone at least 0.2 innings and put no runners on base. He has walked 8 batters, compared to 6 strikeouts. This "players can be good now even though they are old and have never been good anyways" approach does not work. Hillenbrand is another fine example of this, but at least he does not put the Angels farther behind.

Howie is back

After hitting his 3rd AAA home run today, Howie has been activated from the 15-day DL... with the game in Salt Lake still going. To make room, Maicer Izturis has been placed on the 15-day DL with more hamstring issues.

Giambi? Percival?

The New York Post considers the possibility of Jason Giambi coming to the Angels.

According to a person with knowledge of the Angels’ thinking, the AL West leaders have an interest in acquiring the Yankees’ DH to bolster a lineup that is last in the league in home runs.
The section in bold doesn't give much information as to how seriously this should be taken. Is this individual with "knowledge of the Angels' thinking" an average blogger who claims to know how Stoneman works? Or is it someone who is actually connected to the Angels in some way? It would certainly be a good situation for Vladdy if he had a power hitter like Giambi hitting behind him, rather than Kotchman, who is not yet proven. As long as the Halos wouldn't have to give up too much to get the potential steroid user, it could turn out to be a good move. That is assuming this person "with knowledge of the Angels' thinking" has the right idea of what could be going on, of course.

Then there is Percival. Angels closer for many years and "retired" as of this spring, he is apparently plotting his comeback.
Percival's comeback has taken shape, and his agent, Paul Cohen, said he has had discussions with "several" teams who want to take a long look at the former Angels closer. Percival is working out in Riverside in preparation for possible throwing sessions for scouts.

"He and I have been talking about different possibilities," Cohen said Monday. "We've had some discussions but haven't finalized anything."

Cohen would not say whether the Angels were on the list of potential suitors, and Angels general manager Bill Stoneman did not immediately return phone messages.
That is what these articles always say: the agent/player will not say whether team X is the potential destination. Then they always go on to say that the GM of team X would not speak/return phone calls about the matter. The headlines of these particular types of articles tell the whole story; the actual article itself is used to mention everybody who declined to speak/"did not know" anything about the situation.

Why would Percival come back anyways? Didn't he sign a one-day contract with the Angels just so he could retire as an Angel? The only reason this would make sense for him is if he signed with the Angels. The only reason signing Percival would make sense for the Angels is if Speier's "flu-like symptoms" are much worse than expected.
