Bartolo to the DL

And they call up...

Greg Jones?

The Greg Jones that has pitched a total of 42 innings over four seasons, has never been that great, (lowest ERA was a 4.88 in 2003 when he compiled 27.2 innings; his lowest WHIP in a season came in the same year and was a rather frightening 1.55) and is not a starter?

So the rotation includes Lackey, Escobar, Weaver, Saunders, and...?

Oh, and I almost forgot, they called up Marcus Gwyn. Yes, he is a reliever too. Is this a hint that Moses will scoot from the 'pen to the rotation? (Lots of ?question marks? being used in this post)

It has to be the only possibility, otherwise either Rouwenhorst or Olenberger would be up to the majors. I think they both deserve an opportunity to pitch a major league game soon, especially if Moseley fails in his new role.

A more worrying possibility, presented on Yahoo, is that Ervin may make a return from AAA:

Asked whether struggling Ervin Santana might be recalled from the minors, Scioscia said: "Ervin is an option, but we'll take this one step at a time."

I very much hope Scioscia was denying this possibility there, as I don't see one above average AAA start being enough to fix all of Santana's problems.

The Angels lose but Oliver doesn't

Darren Oliver has been pitching surprisingly well recently. Since the beginning of June, he has a 3.08 ERA, with 17 strikeouts to 14 innings pitched. He has only walked three batters in that time, along with 15 hits, leading to a decent 1.23 WHIP over the past month-and-a-half or so. You know what his problem is? His main purpose is as a left-hand specialist, but what kind of specialist has a 2.79 WHIP against the hitters he is supposed to be special against? Lefties are batting .431 against him, a number looking more like an on-base percentage than a batting average.

If a guy is batting in a stadium with a retractable roof, like Rogers Centre in Toronto or Chase Field in Arizona, and half-way through his at-bat, the roof is opened: does the at-bat go in his split stat section as an indoor at-bat or an outdoor at-bat I wonder?

Bartolo

Now that Ervin has been sent to AAA where he will hopefully work his issues out, Bartolo will be trying to avoid the same fate. Is he really in danger of losing his spot to Moseley? Moses has struggled recently, his ERA "exploding" from 2.36 to 3.47 since July 6th, and has not done much work as a starter this year. Thus, he is less likely to be thrown right into the rotation. But, what about everybody's favorite 27 year old, left-handed starting pitching prospect, Jonathan Rouwenhorst? Statistics:

First of all, it should be considered that these stats are from the home run happy PCL. Second, try removing his starts on June 5th and July 14th. His numbers look like this:

Bart's stats become terrible as he throws more pitches, eventually reaching an 8.44 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, and .391 AVG against in the 76-90 pitch range.

With no runners on and no outs, Bartolo has an AVG against of .337. So one third of the time the leadoff batter gets a hit? I wonder how that could be a problem.

One final note, as I wrote this Rouwenhorst pitched rather poorly and his ERA rose to a little over 5.00. That's only 3 really bad starts though, I think he deserves to be called up and given a chance to take Bartolo's place.
